Due to COVID-19 we were unable to stage the normal 'event day' Taunton Flyer. We hope that we will be able to start running the Sportive again normally in 2021 and have scheduled the event for Saturday 1st May 2021. However, for 2020 we are now offering you the opportunity to ride the routes on a date that suits you and at your own pace. Medals will be awarded against route distance rather than finish times. So, a gold medal will be awarded to all participants who complete the Wellington Route, a silver for those who complete the Dakota Route and a bronze for completing the Spitfire route. We will still record the 'ride time' for each finisher provided they can prove their times via a fitness app such as STRAVA. This is a fantastic opportunity to ride the Taunton Flyer with a small group of friends and be able to stop for a leisurely break in a local cafe, take a photo, or just soak up the scenery, all without the added presure of trying to chase a medal time.
Additionally we are also bringing back the Three Counties Challenge So, if you complete any of our rides within each of the three counties of Devon, Somerset & Cornwall you will receive our 3CCC medal as an additional bonus.
The Taunton Flyer routes are themed around the wartime airfields of East Devon and Somerset, passing RAF Exeter (Exeter Airport), RAF Dunkeswell, RAF Upottery (Smeatharpe), RAF Culmhead, RAF Merryfield, and RAF Westonzoyland. Each route offers a mixture of open, flowing, flat roads combined with a couple of testing climbs in the Blackdown Hills (an area of outstanding natural beauty).
